STARTTS - NSW Service for the Treatment and Rehabilitation of Torture and Trauma Survivors
STARTTS provides culturally appropriate treatment and support to help refugees, asylum seekers and other people from refugee like situations, to recover from torture and trauma. Their current project in this region aims to address the risk of suicide, enhance mental health literacy and provide direct access to both specialised and localised mainstream mental health services, to two specific groups in the Blue Mountains, Hawkesbury and Penrith regions.
The two specific groups they are working with are people from Arabic speaking countries (such as, but not limited to Iraq, Lebanon, and Syria), and the South Sudanese community, building strengths and resilience and promoting self help and support.
They are doing this by working on the individual and community levels and skilling up community leaders who are embedded in each of their communities allowing future education and improvements in mental health literacy and support.
If you have any questions, or you would like to register your interest in a group please call (02) 9646 6700 or visit the STARTTS website.
Top Blokes – Mentoring Program for Youth in Schools
Top Blokes Foundation is a youth mental health charity that supports young males, aged 10-24 years, to live healthy and safe lives. Through weekly mentoring and social education programs, the Top Blokes Mentoring Program is an evidence-based program that builds young men's knowledge, skills and confidence to improve their mental health, make positive life choices and be an upstander for change.
Top Blokes are currently delivering their 6-month Mentoring Program for high school aged males (14 to 17) across our region facilitated by local qualified Youth Workers. Program participants build skills in critical thinking and informed decision making as they cover workshop topics like mental health and resilience, overcoming risk-taking and peer pressure, developing healthy masculinities and building healthy relationships, in a safe and supportive environment. Top Blokes Mentoring Program has been approved by the NSW Department of Education quality assurance program.
