It has been another busy year as we continued to learn how to navigate the ongoing pandemic and what it means to return to 'a new normal'. For many of us, we've been doing this while simultaneously recovering from multiple floods that ravaged parts of our region throughout 2022.
"Resilience" is a word that has been used frequently over the past 3 years, particularly in our region. It's important to acknowledge that resilience is often the result of surviving and adapting to some of life's biggest challenges. Our region has faced many of those over the past few years and yet our health professionals and stakeholders continue to rally to support the people in our community.
For some of us this time of year brings joy and hope, while for others, the increased expectations of the season can take its toll. As we juggle pre-pandemic activities in a world that has changed so significantly, now may be the time people are struggling the most.
We fund a range of community-based mental health services that are free to access for people of all ages. Our Psychological Therapy Services program provides 6-10 free psychological therapy sessions per calendar year for eligible people, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, carers, children 0-11 years of age, and people effected by bushfires, floods and COVID-19. A GP referral may or may not be needed, depending on eligibility. I encourage GPs to read more about this program on our website and refer patients who are need of this service.
Another option for people needing mental health support, is the free Head to Health phoneline. Health professionals or patients can call 1800 595 212 Monday to Friday from 8:30am - 5:00pm, excluding public holidays. When calling the phoneline you will be transferred to a mental health professional employed by us. These clinicians know our local region and will take the time to listen to your concerns and connect you, or your patient, to the most appropriate local services.
Providing support for those affected by COVID-19 and the floods has been a priority for us this year. I am proud of my staff who have worked tirelessly, with the Commonwealth and NSW Governments, to invest much needed time and funds into areas that have seen significant demand.
As we take a break for the holidays, I urge you all to take care and allow yourself time to rest and rejuvenate. From all of us at Wentworth Healthcare, we wish you a safe and happy festive season. We look forward to working with you all again in 2023
